Making money with Pinterest is the newest social networking marketing tactic. And its working – you just have to know what you are doing and a few tricks.
Just a couple months a go (just before the Panda was let out of the cage) I noticed some traffic to one of my sites that was coming from Pinterest.
I didn’t really even know what Pinterest was at the time – but – if it was sending traffic then I wanted to learn. I’ll tell you all about that farther down
– but first –
As it turns out you can make money direct from Pinterest too, although I haven’t tried it, but it seems most people are seeing some passive cash from pinning Amazon images and linking back using their affiliate link.
Pinterest drives more referral traffic than LinkedIn, GooglePlus, and YouTube, combined!
One – rumor has it that Pinterest uses Skimlinks and automatically turns your Amazon links into affiliate links for the owners of Pinterest, and
Two- Even links that you have already marked with your affiliate link and cloaked using bit.ly and goo.gl and others are overridden with the Skimlink code. Last I heard tinyurl was still working ok…
The good news about knowing this is Skimlinks is a great thing to add and monetize your own blog. Really easy to use and using the “SkimWord” feature it will automatically searched your blog for keywords and then it turns them into affiliate links. Not just to Amazon either, Skimlinks is partnered up with eBay, Canon, Hotels.com and more and more and more. Just go and check them out – soooo simple.
The good thing about knowing the limitations of url shorteners on Pinterest is there is a way around that. You can use a redirect on your own server and set up a complicated tracking coding or try this – Pretty Link plugin!
Pretty Link gives you the ability to select types of redirects, cloaking or non-cloaking, tracks clicks and so much more. You can get the free version that does lots of great stuff but I got the pro-pack because I have lots of different sites and I liked the added features and support. Anytime I have contacted them with a stupid question they always got back to me with the answer within 24hrs and never once did they call me a ninny! Pretty Link Pro
That’s a quick way to monetize Pinterest (and your blog) and sidestep their Skimlinks – but – the best deal is in using it to drive traffic.
So back to my story where I noticed traffic to my blog from Pinterest.
I clicked on the referral and there is was, one of the images on my blog was ‘pinned’ and there were other people that had re-pinned as a result! “That’s cool!” I thought. And started digging into it more and found out that Pinterest drives more referral traffic than LinkedIn, GooglePlus, and YouTube, combined!
It makes sense though if you’ve noticed the new ‘visual’ wave.
Ryan and his team have put together a great report on how to set up your Pinterest to drive traffic – using images, video, setting up contests, how to track and optimize. Did you know there were apps too?
